Small Business Owners Feeling The Pinch

by Eric Menzies

It would be hard to not know that we are in the worst financial crisis at this time in our lives in the United States. Worried on what to do about your business and your money? You are not alone. The days to come may bring great uncertainty about the government's plan to help bail out the banking system in the United States. While it's not clear, what the assistance may be, it appears that the United States will have to solve this problem by taking our money. What is going to happen? We may never know, but what we do know that the majority of Americans are very disgusted with the situation and angry about spending billions of dollars to bail out the banking system, which is known for greed.

The unfortunate truth is that a bailout is not the end to the troubles for those of us who run small businesses. The US economy is in deep trouble and is not likely to be fixed very quickly. All the major news outlets have commentaries about what's happening and what to expect. It seems the consensus is that it's unlikely we're going to experience a level of unemployment seen during the Great Depression. That's the good news. The bad news is that things are ugly and their likely get much worse before they get better. And if that wasn't enough, things are probably not to get better very quickly!

Owners of small businesses probably won't be able to obtain the credit they need to expand the business any time soon. So what can be done? Nobody can tell you what to do with your business, but I've always supported the low-cost, direct marketing technique in my business. You should begin to rethink any creative ways you could seek more revenue for minimal costs. This means that not only will you get new customers for minimal costs, but also that you must try selling more services to your existing customers.

The matter is made more complicated because you're unlikely to have any trouble getting credit in order to expand, but a lot of business owners will have trouble even just surviving the next few years. American consumers have already begun severely reducing spending, and it will get tougher all the time to gain new customers or even to keep the ones you've got. Now is the right time to rededicate your efforts towards the most vital task in your business. That's the business of marketing whatever your business is. Nothing is more critical than marketing efforts in the tough times like the ones we are enduring now.
